Traditional and Modern Market

Monday, March 18, 2013

As we know that in Indonesia, there are many types of markets. But now, I’m just talking about the classification of market, there are Traditional Markets and Modern Markets. Why am I talking about this topic?? This is because I often accompanied my mother shopped at the markets, so I want to tell you a little of my experience and express my opinion on both markets. When shopping, my mother always find a store that fit the needs what she want to purchase, also in accordance with her money. So, she doesn’t just shop at one store. Choose a store that suits our needs is extremely important when we have money, we can use as needed, so it isn’t wasteful. Back to the topic, I will compare the Traditional and Modern markets with my opinion. I will also give an examples of some Traditional and Modern markets in Depok.

First, I started with the Traditional market. Traditional market is a place where buyers and sellers can transact directly and also occur bargaining process. Typically, Traditional market consists of stalls or shops, but there is also a sell on the street and only paved sacks or cardboard. In addition, there is also a sell on the side of the railway. Although in dangerous places, but there is still a buyer, including my mother. Usually my mother shopping in Traditional market to buy ingredients for cooking, such as vegetables, fish, chicken or beef, spices and others. When I asked my mother, what is the reason she always grocery shopping in Traditional market, she replied that there is much cheaper than the Modern market, there are also many vendors who sells the same type of stuff, so you can choose which one is better. Even more importantly, my mother can bargain the price with the seller, so she can get an even cheaper price and my mother is very skilled in bargaining. So, although sometimes sells in Traditional market place was dirty, somewhat dangerous, smelly and hot, it doesn’t make people who want a cheaper price for the quality of goods is also reluctant to the Traditional market. This is an example for Traditional market in Depok.

Second, the Modern market. Modern market is a place where sellers and buyers aren’t transact directly. Buyers are usually served by a salesman and also can’t be a process of bargaining, because the price of goods already listed. Usually, Modern markets are in a clean building and belongings neatly so comfortable shopping there. Sometimes, my mother also shop at the Modern market, but only for the purchase of household appliances and items for personal care, such as bathing soap, shampoo, cosmetic tools and others. However, the frequency of shopping at the Modern market fewer than shopping at Traditional market, because these goods are purchased in Modern market are goods that last a long time, so it doesn’t need too much time to spend there. This is an example for Modern market in Depok.

In conclusion, the Traditional markets with Modern markets, both of them have advantages and disadvantages. If we want a cheaper price even cheaper again, we should choose a Traditional market although less convenient place. But, if you prefer shopping place is clean and comfortable, we should choose the Modern market although with a more expensive price. Essentially, it all depends on your needs and desires.
